- 🇮🇹 Non si può avere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca = One can’t have a full barrel and a drunk wife =

🇬🇧 Corresponding proverb: “You can’t have your cake and eat it too” This saying explains how you should not want more than you deserve or can deal with so, in my humble opinion this boils down to your level of marital bliss of course!… either your spouse is happy and tipsy or you have a full barrel of wine to sell! So, one could even compare this to how much money a winemaker might make, less money and a peaceful life or more money and bachelorhood.

= Those who like drinking always talk about wine. =

🇬🇧 Ahhh… here is a shout out to the closet alcoholics in the house, if you know your stuff then you might get away with a licence to drink more!! (This is just an opinion – please do not hold it against me!)

3. 🇮🇹 Nel vino c’è la verità = In wine there is truth =

@jeztimms on Unsplash, designed by 小Vino
🇬🇧 This comes from the old latin saying In vino veritas, when people would speak their the absolute truth because of how much they had consumed… but I would propose it is possibly when very drunk people would shove their foot in their mouths and then blame it on the booze so that the next day they could take it all back!

4. 🇮🇹 Nella botte piccola c’è il vino buono = In small barrels, there’s good wine =

🇬🇧 Corresponding proverb: “Good things come in small packages” This sentence probably underlines how small and simple people or things have the best qualities but… I have heard this one before, but perhaps not in the context of wine 😉

5. 🇮🇹 Il vino fa buon sangue = Good wine makes good blood =

🇬🇧 In Italy this saying is most commonly understood as meaning that a glass of wine or two during a meal is the best way to keep yourself healthy…although I would like to propose an alternative possibility… if drinking wine gives you good blood, then this corresponds to the age old “drinking buddy”. Partners in crime…or parties, either way, when someone says you have good blood, whether alcohol is present or not – you’re in the club of approved company.

6. 🇮🇹 Dove regna il vino non regna il silenzio = Where wine reigns, silence does not reign =

Photo by mona Masoumi on Unsplash, designed by 小Vino
🇬🇧 This saying is pretty self explanatory since in Italy, wine is a staple; this is where it flows. So if you want a very quiet dinner, bring your headphones because just like wine there is just as much noise! (but you would be missing a lot of fun!)

7. 🇮🇹 Dire pane al pane e vino al vino = Speak bread to bread and wine to wine =

Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash, designed by 小Vino
🇬🇧 This is a figurative expression that encourages someone not to lie about something, but speak the truth instead. The saying, “let’s call a spade a spade, not a gardening tool” is often used in English (the randomness of this English equivalent is mind-blowing), it essentially means calling something “as it is”, that is, by its right or proper name, without “beating about the bush”—. Italians love to talk, so beating around the bush can be an art form, although they are extremely eloquent and as sharp as a knife if they need a point to come across clearly!

8. 🇮🇹 Anni e bicchieri di vino non si contano mai = Age and glasses of wine should never be counted =

Photo by Kelsey Knight on Unsplash, designed by 小Vino
🇬🇧 Italians are young at heart and this saying is just a way to express an invitation to fully enjoy life to the fullest…. However, I am thinking that wine is the magic behind the booming octogenarian population in Italy!

9. 🇮🇹 Amici e vini sono meglio vecchi = Friends, like wine, are best when aged. =

Photo by Anna Auza and Marvin L on Unsplash, designed by 小Vino
🇬🇧 This saying implies that you should to take good care of your friends the same way as a wine producer would do with his wine. Friendships in Italy might seem easy to find in Italy since Italians are just so friendly, it is part of their charm, but what a lot of people outside of the culture often do not see is that Italians can actually be quite hard nuts to crack. They have a side that is uber friendly and cordial but it can be difficult to truly earn their trust. So when you actually do (out of consistency, kindness, loyalty and good manners over time) the friendship can last a lifetime. It is always well worth the wait!
