Looking back, I have been living in Italy for three years and working for two of them. After the harvest on the Sonoma coast in California, I dragged my luggage all the way here to Verona. It was in this Italian city that slowly but surely I was to continue my wine education, the second year of Vinifera EuroMaster. The Enology department was located near the prestigious Valpolicella wine region – the name Valpolicella means the valley of many cellars, (which has both a Greek and Latin root). The marketing teacher had arranged a couple of classes be held at a winery in the area. This winery located at the Villa della Torre, of the Allegrini Estates is where I can recall some of my most vivid memories.

Allegrini was the first Italian winery I ever visited. Villa della Torre, one of the important properties belonging to the winery, was built in the Renaissance period. Marilisa Allegrini, the gracious owner, came out to meet us. She went on to gracefully introduce four grape varieties to our group which are used to make Valpolicella wines. My first impression of Marilisa was that she was a well-dressed lady, with great hospitality skills. After observing her at various events, I gradually learned about her excellent taste for clothing and goddess aura with which she carries herself.

Siblings united is a strength, Continuing the Family’s Legend
In the Valpolicella region, the Allegrini family has been carrying on the winemaking tradition for more than 200 years. After the premature death of Giovanni Allegrini in 1983, his three children took over the company; thereafter, the three young siblings inherited the family’s vineyards. They were inexperienced and overwhelmed, but in order to continue the prosperity of the family business, the eldest brother Walter said to his younger brother and sister: “We have to fight like lions [to make it in this business]”. Another tragedy then struck, Walter died after planting 11 hectares of vineyards in 2003, at the newly purchased Poggio al Tesoro winery. Marilisa, who had little experience in viticulture, continued the mission and completed the establishment of the winery. At present, Marilisa and Franco Allegrini (the sixth generation of Allegrini’s) joined as a team, coalescing their individual strengths, developing the estates into one of Italy’s leading brands. They both became engaged in their own passionate undertakings and have made remarkable achievements in their own respective fields, they fulfilled Walters desire to make it. Marilisa flies all around the globe to promote Allegrini’s wines, while Franco works in the vineyards and cellars diligently to oversee the production. When Marilisa returns from business trips, she discusses wine styles with Franco, ruminating over all the popular wines on the market. Both individuals have carried their father Giovanni’s entrepreneurial spirit of innovation forward, highlighting hospitality and strong execution of strategy in their own unique ways.

Hospitality takes the Wine Business forward
Marilisa has been in charge of the marketing division of the winery since 1980. As she has said many times during her interviews, she learned about the art of hospitality from her father. Giovanni Allegrini used to open the wine cellar and invite guests for wine tastings, listening carefully to everyone’s comments and opinions on the wine. He jumped from one precious barrel to another like a spring, thus, he gained his nickname “Barrel Spider”. Every year when Italy’s largest wine exhibition Vinitaly is held here in Verona, she invites hundreds of guests to her gala dinner at Villa della Torre. She is well aware of the importance of cultivating friendship. It is not simply a matter of exchanging name cards, she also knows how to make sure the wine merchants from all over the world enjoy the Allegrini hospitality. In September last year, Allegrini held its first “boot camp“, inviting young professionals under 30 from all over Europe to participate in wine industry training. Allegrini also invited industry elites to conduct seminars. She is planting a seed in the hearts of these young professionals, who will then grow to be an ambassador for the winery. The establishment of friendship in the business world does not take place overnight. Sincerity, hospitality and social responsibility make the winery brand go further.

Innovation,dare to be first
Giovanni was a pioneer in Valpolicella. In 1976, Giovanni paid a visit to California. He saw the Double Guyot training system there and wondered about it. He realised that it is not the yield per vine which determines the quality of wine instead, the yield per hectare. When he came back to Valpolicella, he immediately increased the density of the plantation from 2000 vines per hectare to 4000 vines per hectare. Even his best friend was laughing at him at the time: “Are you planting vines, or lettuce?”. At that moment in Valpolicella, the pergola training system was the standard system in use. Even nowadays if you travel around the Valpolicella countryside, you can see half of the vineyard is still applying the Pergola training system. And we all know how hard it is to break with tradition. We can imagine this man who followed his intuition and had the power to execute his ideas. He lead the quality evolution of the Valpolicella region.

Also worth mentioning is the single vineyard cultivation of the winery. DOC and DOCG appellations not only have requirements for grape varieties, but also specify the proportion of specific varieties. However, what if you don’t like certain grapes? The idea of a single vineyard comes from the dislike of Molinara grape flavour. Allegrini was the first to introduce the concept of a Single Vineyard Cru. They are developing their best vineyard using a single variety, Corvina Veronese. A good example of this is their top wine: La Poja. The vineyard is on the top of the La Grola hill and has been planted with Corvina exclusively since the late 1970s. Premium quality viticultural techniques yield grapes with great personality and maturity. After over 4 years of ageing, the wine is still extraordinarily fresh and crisp, it has a full spectrum of aromas ranging from fruit to spices and herbs.

Never stop, the next generation is always promising
The Allegrini family also manages two other wineries in other well-known Italian producing areas, namely, San Polo winery in Montalcino and Poggio al Tesoro winery in Bolgheri. In 2015, Marilisa appointed her daughter, Caterina, as the CEO of San Polo. “Giving the next generation opportunities and the responsibility is crucial to developing their entrepreneurial spirit and for keeping the wine industry dynamic and moving forward”, says Marilisa. In early 2019, Allegrini officially purchased 40 hectares of vineyards in Lugana. Franco and Marilisa said: “This is a place where very high quality white wine is produced and it is a big challenge for us.”
